Summer is here, and with it so are a variety of DIY projects, both indoors and out…and there’s one new tool that I bet you haven’t touched yet! The 3D printer. This is technologies gift to the DIY masters out there, and if you aren’t using it already, you are missing out. Easier to use than ever, and with materials so affordable, you won’t believe you paid craft store prices on accents for so long!
What are you looking to make? Garden signs? Print these at .20 cents a piece, paint and you’ve got something adorable! Cookies? Check out the cutters you can download and print; anything from the Chanel Logo for girls night to Pikachu for the kids! Jewelry? The free to print pendants range from an adorable low poly elephant, to Griever from FF8. Something I haven’t thought of? It’s probably out there. Just pull up Thingiverse, type what you want in the search bar, and a model you can print will appear on your screen.
Within the next 3-5 years it’s increasingly likely that 3D printers will be household items. Their usefulness is rapidly increasing as both printers and printing materials benefit from the expiration of copyrights, allowing a truly open marketplace to explode. For the average person this means anything you need smaller than a cubic foot could take just a few clicks on the computer, a button on the printer and wallah! The object will gradually appear within a machine the size of your microwave…and yeah, that sounds all futuristic, but you could actually go pick one up from Home Depot tomorrow if you wanted.
Knowing where to get started is still tough, and it can seem very intimidating. Everything has come so far so fast that there is very little guidance. That’s why we’re doing a series of posts on how to get started 3D printing. We’ll cover everything from selecting a printer to tips for troubleshooting. By the time we’re done you’ll have a walk through of what to do from the moment you decide owning a printer is for you until you get that first print off the bed. (And that really is a magical feeling)
